Past Programs Columbia Gorge Earth Center—Programs

CGEC began in 1999, when local business owner Brian Carlstrom gathered interested folks to plan a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Earth Day. From 2000-2003, We coordinated four provocative, informative and inspirational Earth Day events in Downtown Hood River.

Our Earth Day events staged on Main street in Hood River each year, and included information booths, lectures, multi-cultural music, a 5k/10k/ “fun run”, impressive keynote speakers (including: Cascade Indian chief Johnny Jackson, Congress woman Elizabeth Furse, and activist Julia “Butterfly” Hill. We generally culminated with the community-based artistic parade called Procession of The Species.

Eventually, we realized that too much effort went into planning activities for a once-a-year event. So we have since determined to avail daily local access to much of the information and inspiration that was captured during those Earth Day celebrations which we organized.

With that said- We had so much fun at Earth Day that we are considering going back to our roots! Any one interested in volunteering for next year’s Procession of the Species?!
